Children living in slums are facing a number of challenges ranging from poverty to accessing quality and better education.LEAP Initiative helps these children get out of vicious cycle of poverty by planning education mentorship programmes,providing learning materials,economic Empowerment of families,provision of sanitary pads to adolescent girls as well as offering guiding and counselling sessions for at risk children.Assist LEAP transform the lives of children living in Mathare slum.
Based on research conducted ,majority of children living in slums finds it difficult to access education due to a number of factors which includes inadequate meals ,lack of school uniforms,lack of learning stationeries like books and pens as well as other good shelters. The rate of school dropout among adolescent girls is very high due to lack of sanitary pads to be used by the girls during their menstrual cycle.
LEAP Initiative has mentorship programmes which aims at improving performance of school going children coming from poor and vulnerable families. LEAP supports feeding programme for early childhood kids while increasing retention rates in schools. Through organizing educational forums and Empowerment initiatives majority of children will be able to acess better education without difficulties.
The project will transform the lives of needy and vulnerable children in the slums of Mathare . This will be through providing an enabling environment for quality education and providing platform where children can share their challenges and get solutions through support from LEAP Initiative. The project will lead to social and economic empowerment of community hence reducing dependency levels and promoting self sufficiency .
