Vision loss due to cataracts is one of the leading, and most treatable, causes of blindness worldwide. Those affected don't just lose their sight; they can also lose their ability to work, care for family, and participate in community life. We have over 200 patients with vision problems due to cataract or pterygium in our database; Many have been waiting for a decade. Unfortunately, the multi-year wait list and $1,500+ cost of surgery is simply out of reach. This program aims to change that.
We see a lot of otherwise healthy people who would like to work, but are unable to because of their sight problem and thus only get deeper into poverty. By working with several ophthalmologists to perform one week of cataract surgery, we want to help a large number of patients with vision problems due to cataracts and pterygium. These relatively simple but life-altering surgeries will give our patients back their sight, independence, and ability to work to care for their families.
The loss of vision pulling someone from the workforce only deepens the cycle of poverty, not only for the individual, but for their family members who need to care for them. Vision restoration through cataract and/or pterygium surgery can give families and entire communities more opportunities to earn funds that will help them rise from proverty and provide for generational well-being.
