Summary

This project will help change the lives of 350,000 people living in Antananarivo, Madagascar. At Gather, we use data to help decision-makers know where and how to improve sanitation infrastructure and services for low-income communities. Collaboration is one of our core values. We believe in the potential of sharing data so that decision-makers have a city-wide understanding of the problem and can work together to solve it. This project will help us transform data behaviours together.

Challenge

Madagascar ranks 172nd for sanitation provision out of 180 countries. Current research suggests that Madagascar's economy loses nearly $600 million each year from lost productivity and increased health costs due to sanitation-related disease. Despite pioneering new solutions to the sanitation crisis, the Malagasy sanitation sector has struggled to collect consistent and robust data, and this has limited its ability to make effective investments and address population risks.

Solution

Alongside our sanitation partners, we will be exploring how to transform the collection, sharing and analysis of sanitation data through our workshops. To end the sanitation crisis, we will help collect more data on the transportation and treatment of toilet waste. This will be addressed within our workshops. We will work with our partners to create a map that shows the current state of sanitation for Antananarivo and tracks progress over time.

Long-Term Impact

Toilets change everything and lead to healthy, thriving cities. We hope to expand our work to reach all 1.6 million people living in Antananarivo before replicating in other four emerging cities across the world.
