Challenge

Maternal mortality in Liberia is 725 deaths per 100,000 and neonatal mortality is 37 deaths per 1000 births (WHO, 2017). Midwives and nurses in Liberia provide primary care for all ages. Professional development for the renewal of licenses is not mandatory in Liberia, leading to a gap in the provision of quality care. There is a critical shortage of continuing education for practicing nurses and midwives.

Solution

Improving health care in Liberia is a priority for the Friends of Liberia. This project will not only provide up to date training, education and skill development for twenty supervisory nurses and midwives, but also will train them to train others in their facilities. Attendees will come from 20 major hospitals. This project will ensure continuous professional competency as a way of improving health care outcomes in Liberia.

Long-Term Impact

Faculty members from twenty nursing/midwifery schools, attended a similar workshop in January 2020, sharing updated skills and knowledge with their ongoing student populations for a multiplier effect that reached several hundred soon-to-be health care professionals. Conducting a workshop for supervisory nurses and midwives will provide these on-the-ground, experienced health care workers and their front-line staff with up-to-date knowledge and expertise, producing another multiplier effect.
