Help FAVL Bring a Mobile Library to Burkina Faso

FAVL's motorbike mobile library proposal is a continuation of a project, "Youth in Tuy Read," that FAVL completed in summer 2014. As part of the YTR initiative, FAVL transported novels by bicycle to young adult readers in hard-to-reach areas near our existing village libraries. Unfortunately, Burkina's rural roads are in such poor condition that we cannot regularly ship books on bicycle. In addition to providing a greater number and variety of books, this GlobalGiving project also addresses the needs of a larger population of readers, namely, adult, young adult, AND children, who wish to have access to age-appropriate books.
As of the end of February, FAVL has raised $250, a good start, towards providing mobile library service to a dozen remote Burkinabè villages. We thank our GlobalGiving donor partners for their generous support of our project! We need an additional $1750 in order to afford to purchase a covered "motortrike," which we will use to transport books to rural villages that lack access to books and other reading materials; our target villages have neither libraries nor bookstores. With the remaining funds, we will be able to purchase 250 children's picture books and 150 adult novels to stock the mobile library, as well as to pay for a librarian/chauffeur (driver), gas and motorbike maintenance required for safe travel on Burkina's rutted, dirt roads.

Thanks to generous donors, we've already raised more than $100 towards the mobile library. With $2000, we'll be able to buy a motorbike with a covered cart, which we will be able to use to transport books places in rural Burkina Faso that are both hard to reach and don't have access to books (no libraries or bookstores). With the remaining funds, we would like to purchase 250 children's picture books and 150 adult novels to stock the mobile library as well as a librarian/chauffeur, gas and motorbike maintenance. The mobile library will follow up a recent project that FAVL completed called "Youth in Tuy Read," where we transported novels to young adults in hard-to-reach areas near village libraries. Unfortunately, the roads are not good enough to be regularly shipped books on bicycle and the program did not address the needs of adults and younger children who would also like to have access to books. So as a continuation of the project, we hope to be able to start the motorbike mobile library.

Thanks to generous donors who keep giving to the Motorbike Mobile Library project, we're getting closer to our goal. FAVL's Motorbike Library will be the first of it's kind in Burkina Faso, a country with one of the lowest literacy rates in the world. The goal of the project is to provide access to books in hard-to-reach rural villages in the southwest. Many of these villages are hard to get to due to pot-holed, unpaved roads. While they may have primary schools and middle schools, the classrooms are overcrowded and the stock of schoolbooks is limited. Access to other reading materials to supplement lessons is out of the question. Novels and picture books are expensive, often out of the price range for the average family, and are only available in larger urban centers. While FAVL has established and continues to support village libraries in the area, not everyone can easily reach them. The motorbike library would supply 400 adult and children's books to 12 rural communities in 3 zones. People would be able to lend books from the mobile library for two weeks, at which time the coordinator/driver would return to allow them to take new books. While in the communities, the coordinator/driver will also perform local folktales and other stories to encourage people to take advantage of the library. The cart carrying the books on the back of the moto will be covered to protect the books from dust and rain. We know that community members will enjoy finally having access to novels by African authors, picture books and farming and hygiene guides in local languages, and it's thanks to many wonderful donors that this project will become a reality.
