We have been working in Cameroon for many years now, in partnership with a local non-profit called Mirando por Africa. The organisation works in Douala, the capital of the country, in the New Bell district. Its aim is to raise awareness, educate and help families and children with functional and intellectual disabilities. They are strongly rejected as it is considered a divine punishment. Most of the families live far away, some children use wheelchairs and safe transportation is unavailable.
Transport in Douala is very limited in terms of resources and means. People usually travel by taxi in poor conditions and with a restricted occupancy. Others have to share a motorbike between more than 4 people at once. This situation makes it very difficult for children with disabilities to travel to schools, to therapy and to other areas to carry out activities to integrate, raise awareness and improve their conditions. Several children are stuck at home as a result.
The vehicle is the feet of many families with children with cerebral palsy! A four-wheel drive is the optimal transport for African soil. It allows more people to be transported in a much safer way. The requirements are simple: it has to be in good condition and no longer allowed to circulate in Spain due to new regulations (2020). We aim to bring two cars and hire a driver. This will allow us to provide efficient transportation.
Efficient travel takes a load off the shoulders of families allowing them to focus on supporting their children in their development and education. The children are able to fully enjoy the activities and the benefits of the therapies, allowing them to gain independence and live a fulfilling life. With the intention of reaching more and more families, our ultimate goal is to build a socio-educational center for these children, which would be the first private special education school in Cameroon.
