Uttarayan Save Birds Campaign is one of the most important campaigns of Jivdaya Charitable Trust in the entire year. Duration of this campaign is almost 90 days that starts from the end of December and continue till the end of March. This campaign is all about saving our regional and migrated avian lives injured severely by the deadly glass coated threads called (Manja) during the kite flying festival. Apparently, this innocent kite flying festival, famous in Gujarat by “UTTARAYAN” claims many lives. Every year we receive more than 3500 injured birds only in January. It takes 6 months to almost a year to heal these injured birds and go back to their natural habitat in few cases.

This Uttarayan (Kite Flying Festival 2021) received 40 painted storks from Charal village near Sanand, GIDC, Ahmedabad, badly injured in glass coated Chinese Manja (banned by National Green Tribunal (NGT) in 2017). Most of the cases were found with deep lacerated wounds on the wing and severe infections. Each bird we received needed surgical intervention to repair the lacerated wounds. Our vets performed both soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries to fix the wound to save the life. Now the birds are kept in the aviary. With regular feeding monitoring, bandaging, flight assessment, and physiotherapy, they are on the way to their speedy recovery. Once they recover, they will be released to their natural colony.

Dear friends, post-operative management and care need more attention and go from a few days to months as per the injury's nature and extent. The entire process requires a lot of funds. We request you to join your hands to save these precious lives, cos, if we need to secure our future, we must take care of our Mother Nature. We believe with your kind support; we will save not only these storks but also many more avian lives.
