'Rani' the bar-headed goose paid the price of our

Beauty in our aviary
Beauty in our aviary

Every year, hundreds of bird species travel thousands of kilometres, crossing borders and continents to reach Gujarat for its rich diversity of flora and fauna, in search of suitable conditions, food, and habitats. Thol and Nalsorovar near Ahmedabad in Gujarat are the major pockets of migratory bird species mainly inhabits as their wintering ground. Birds like crane, geese, pelicans and ibis from Europe, Asia, Africa, Russia cross the Himalayas to spend the winter in and around Ahmedabad.

Bar-headed Geese are adapted to fly in low oxygen conditions. They have larger lungs and breathe more efficiently than other birds. Their haemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in the blood, also binds oxygen more tightly than that of other birds. That is why it is called one of the highest-flying migrated bird of the world. The species has been reported as migrating from south Tibet, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russia and crossing the Himalaya (one of the most high-altitude migrations in the world) to spend winter ground in Ahmedabad.

Every January we celebrate ‘kite Flying Festival’ in Gujarat where people fly kites with glass coated threads for fun. This apparently innocent looking festival claims thousands of avian lives (including local and migrated) with the glass coated thread which called ‘Manja’.

At the end of January’21, we have received a Bar-headed goose with a deep laceration on the left-wing patagial. The wing was cut badly due to the sharp kite strings till the bone. When we received this avian beauty, we immediately named her ‘Rani’(queen) for her stunning beauty. Unfortunately, by the time we have received Rani, she was already having an infection due to the old wound. Our team fought hard to save her wing but despite of our best shots we could not save her wing, but we did not lose the battle and saved her life.

At present ‘Rani’ is recovering and having a worry- free life at our aviary with her other friends. Soon she will be shifted to some Nature Park to lead a happy life with her own kind of species.

Friends, we should take care of our activities as most of our celebrations cause a lot of damages to our mother nature and the wildlife. If we celebrate all our festivals little sensibly, we can save many lives and secure our future too. These innocent lives do not deserve the pain. They should not pay the price of our irresponsible acts.

We thank all our donors to make a change in many lives like ‘Rani’. Your kind donations and contributions help us saving lives and continue doing the same every day.
