The powerful earthquake that hit Morocco in early September 2023, impacted many lives within the country. Among the badly affected, teenagers suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, caused by the death and separation of their loved ones. Multiple actions were tackled: reconstructing houses, providing food, water, and shelter. However, the mental health of teenagers remains significantly unaddressed.
After having heard innumerable stories of post traumatic stress disorder, Project Soar, accompanied by the student Meriem Farah, has decided to provide mental health support and yoga classes, so as to impact students' health not only from the mental point of view but from the physical side as well. Many teen survivors spoke about their obsessive thoughts, their compulsive rumination, about the earthquake, of panic and of being trapped with nowhere to go and the devastation that resulted.
In addition to providing mental health and resilience workshops to earthquake survivors, the project will be complemented by yoga lessons to impact 900+ teen girls + students' health, helping them get in touch with their body, relieve stress, and increase their mental and physical strength.
Project Soar is providing mental health and resilience workshops designed to provide basic coping skills that can be used anywhere and at any time and for as long as they are needed; at the same time, providing students with basic yoga knowledge will give them the opportunity to continue the trauma relief path on their own.
