A heartfelt letter from a special supporter

By Iman Zaoin | Communication & Development Assistant

Dear Friends,

As we see the first results of the Trauma relief yoga program, Project Soar is sending gratitude to You, our generous supporter! Since the project's inception, we have raised $23,923 with the assistance of 61 donors. As of now, 283 teenage girls from six schools have benefited from 24 yoga workshops. Thank you, we could not do it without your help!

We're excited to share more about the profound impact your contribution is having. For this reason, we've invited a cherished friend and special supporter to share her experience from visiting some of the schools where our yoga classes are making a difference. Here's her recount:

“Hello,

This is Meriem Farah, and I am an 11th grade Moroccan/American student. Being deeply touched by the devastating earthquake outcome, I was determined to discover how to support. I have seen many initiatives being taken, such as rebuilding schools and providing food, water, and shelter. However, I have noticed that the mental health of teenagers remains significantly unaddressed. Personally, athletics have always been a vital component of my life, being part of the basketball and volleyball teams. I understood that not only has sports affected me physically, but it positively impacted my life and mental health. I want to make an impact on these young victims. That’s why, I have partnered with Project Soar, to provide mental workshops and yoga classes to the impacted teenagers.

In February, I had the privilege of meeting with the Project Soar Team, where, alongside two exceptional instructors, we embarked on an immersive journey. Venturing into the heart of two distinct schools, we didn't merely observe; we actively participated, engaging in two invigorating yoga classes. These sessions, guided by our instructors with warmth and expertise, transcended mere physical exercise, becoming profound journeys into mindfulness and self-discovery.

Upon arrival at the first school, we were greeted by the sight of young boys playing soccer while others eagerly watched. As we approached the front doors, the students' attention turned towards us. Meeting with the Head of the School, we received expressions of gratitude for our cause, and she eagerly anticipated her students' participation in the yoga classes. After setting up the mats, I introduced myself to the students, easing their curiosity, and commenced the yoga session.

Though it was my first official yoga class, I quickly realized its athletic nature as I struggled with the positions alongside the other girls. Laughter filled the room as we attempted the poses. In the absence of the instructor momentarily, I took the opportunity to learn each student's name and even taught them some English. Witnessing their smiles despite their hardships warmed my heart, and I continued to stay in touch with some of the girls.

Moving to the next school, we were greeted with exuberant screams and embraces from the young girls, despite it only being their second session. Observing these interactions filled me with immense joy, realizing the impact we were making in their lives. The larger session took place outdoors in beautiful weather. Sneaking glances at one another and sharing laughter, we formed a bond. As the session concluded, we gathered in a circle to share our experiences, with the girls expressing their love for yoga and their favorite positions, in yoga terminology!

Reflecting on the journey since the inception of our project fills me with immense pride and gratitude. With the invaluable support of 61 donors, we have raised $23,923, enabling us to make a difference in the lives of 283 teenage girls. I witnessed firsthand the profound impact of our efforts. Engaging in yoga sessions with the students, I experienced moments of laughter, connection, and mutual learning. From easing their curiosity during introductions to witnessing their joyous embraces, each interaction reinforced the significance of our mission. It became evident that our collective dedication to mindfulness and self-discovery was fostering positive change.

Looking ahead, I am filled with renewed determination to continue our mission and empower more young girls.

Best Regards,

Meriem Farah”

We are so thankful for Meriem’s engagement in this meaningful cause. And to you, our dear supporters, stay tuned for more stories regarding the great impact this project has on the lives of so many girls who were displaced by the earthquake! Never doubt you are making a difference!

Warmest wishes,

Project Soar team
