Dear Valued TPF Supporters,
In the face of unimaginable challenges brought by the devastating earthquakes of 2023, your unwavering generosity has ignited a beacon of hope, resilience, and renewal across Türkiye. Because of your compassionate support, Turkish Philanthropy Funds (TPF) has raised an inspiring $20.5 million and granted $16 million to 93 dedicated NGOs, empowering 174 transformative projects that have touched the lives of 2.8 million individuals.
Together, we are committed to not only rebuilding communities but transforming them into vibrant, sustainable havens where hope flourishes and lives thrive. Our mission extends beyond physical reconstruction — we aim to nurture long-term resilience, fostering communities where people feel empowered to stay, return, and flourish in their renewed homes and surroundings.
It is our privilege to share with you inspiring stories of impact made possible through your partnership. These narratives exemplify the profound, lasting difference you are helping create—a testament to your compassion and dedication.
Healing Waves in Hatay
After the February 2023 earthquakes, the Hatay Surf Center — established through collaborations with YAPDER, Support to Life (STL), and Mellow Turkey, with a $49,225 grant from TPF — has become more than a surf school; it is a sanctuary of hope and resilience. Serving over 1,050 youth aged 13–16, the center provides a safe, inclusive space where physical activity becomes a pathway to emotional healing and community rebuilding.
Akl’s Journey: A Wave Toward the Future
Sixteen-year-old Akl from Samandag arrived at the surf center overwhelmed by grief and uncertainty. Yet, through the serenity of the sea, his courage blossomed. Recognized for his natural talent, he was invited to join the Surf Leadership Program. Within months, Akl emerged not just as a participant but as a leader and a champion, winning first place at the Türkiye Surfing Championship and earning a spot at an international surf camp in Sri Lanka. His words echo: "I never imagined leaving Hatay, but now I feel the whole ocean is open to me." Surfing has given Akl a new outlook—a future filled with hope, possibility, and purpose.
Yasemin’s Transformation: From Fear to Freedom
Initially hesitant, 14-year-old Yasemin’s journey with the surf center transformed her from a quiet, cautious girl to a confident young leader. She not only learned to surf but also found her voice within a supportive community. Her proudest achievement? Watching her younger sister aspire to be just like her, embodying resilience and hope.
Looking Ahead
In 2025, plans are underway to expand the Hatay Surf Center into a comprehensive life skills campus, including classrooms, accommodations, and training facilities. We are excited to introduce innovative virtual reality tools to help youth overcome fears and enhance their skills. Additionally, five emerging surf leaders will represent Hatay at an international level, showcasing their journey of hope and determination on a global stage.
Empowering Rural Education Through KODA
The Rural Schools Transformation Network (KODA), supported by a $549,719 grant from TPF, continues to strengthen educational resilience in Türkiye’s rural, earthquake-impacted regions. By empowering 99 educators with mentorship, professional development, and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) practices, the program nurtures a foundation for sustainable growth—impacting over 500 students directly and projecting over 2,300 students by year’s end.
From Doubt to Confidence: Stories of Growth
One young teacher, initially overwhelmed by the complexities of working in a post-disaster rural setting, discovered renewed confidence after intensive training sessions. Her words reflect the program’s impact: “I wasn’t sure I could implement what I learned, but now I feel excited and ready to make a difference.”
Similarly, an experienced educator shared how the camp fostered collaboration, insight, and personal growth: “This was the most enriching experience I’ve had. I feel more knowledgeable, more connected, and more committed than ever to nurturing my students.”
Looking Forward
KODA is working on finalizing a comprehensive SEL guidebook tailored for post-disaster classrooms, alongside expanding its peer networks and alumni engagement. With continued support, we aim to reach even more children and expand our reach into new rural communities next year.
Your kindness and commitment have catalyzed real, lasting change. Because of you, communities are healing, young lives are transforming, and hope is taking root anew. We are inspired by your compassion and honored to share these stories of impact—reminders that together, we can create a brighter future for all.
With deepest gratitude and hope,
Team TPF
