Treating Children suffering from Retinal Diseases

Heart And Hand for Handicapped is celebrateing it's 50th anniversary this year. For the past 50 years an organization conceived at the Ganesh Temple in NY has been helping differently abled children in India and USA by sending donations to various charities.

Details of the Retinal surgery conducted at Mahavir Netralaya for children in last quarter 2021 are enumerated below:

 In the last quarter Mahavir Netralaya has been pursuing our endeavor to a healthy society as far as vision is concerned.  Mahavir Netralaya has kept our Surgery cost quite affordable which is very much lesser than what private practitioners are charging. Also, Mahavir Netralaya is flexible with surgery cost for children and is making adjustment for the poor people in couple of cases, it is even done for free.  

 Details of the Retinal surgery conducted (in lesser cost) at Mahavir Netralaya in last quarter 2021:

• Vitero Retinal (VR) surgeries for Retinal detachment                     -    3 eyes were treated for children
• Vitero Retinal surgeries for Vitreous Haemorrage                          -    2 eyes were treated for children
• Management of nuclear Epiretinal Memb removal                          -    1 eye were treated for children
• Management of  macular hole                                                         -    2 eyes were treated for children
• Photocoagulation (by GREEN) laser for ROP                                 -    2 eyes were treated for children
• Intravitreal  AntiVEGF for ROP                                                       -     2 eyes were treated for children

In addition for babies with premature birth are mostly sick & hospitalized, the doctors are planning to visit them in NICU itself and provide bedside Retinal examination.

This organization is planning to conduct screening for Diabetic retinopathy in nearby places as prevalence of Diabetes is very high in this part.

Mahavir Netralaya has been successfully performing all above mentioned VR procedures in the past. We would like to continue our services at an affordable cost. So that “NO” patient should be left  untreated.

For bedside screening of ROP in the next quarter 2022 we would like to purchase one good quality Indirect Ophthalmoscope which costs around $2600 using the donations from GlobalGiving .

in the last quarter the organization has been successfully performing retinal surgeries in a large number of cases including pediatric retinal cases.  The outcome of surgery was satisfactory and the patients were able to see much better.  In view of our growing number of retinal surgeries, we require funds to enhance our setup and be able to extend our reach to far corners of Bihar.

Details of the Retinal surgery conducted at Mahavir Netralaya for children in last few months are enumerated below:

• Green Laser for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) - 4 eyes
• Intravitreal AVASTN injection in RoP cases - 6 eyes
• Vitero Retinal surgeries forTraumaticRD-4eyes
• Vitero Retinal surgeries for MacularHole-2eyes
• Foreign body removal from vitreous - 1 eye
• Traumatic lens dislocation removal & secondary IOL - 1 eye

Furthermore, this organization would like to enhance our services in Posterior segment (i.e. Retina) at Mahavir Netralaya apart from our pediatric and General ophthalmology segment especially for children with retinal problems.

The retinal problems in pediatric patients are mostly left unattended by general ophthalmologist in far flung areas because of lack of facility. Moreover, most of these patients belong to deprived section of the society and are unable to reach tertiary care hospitals.

Continuing with our dedicated service, the organization would like to extend our approach to whole of Bihar so that more and more children can be treated and cured. For this, they are going to conduct
regular screening at different location around our district where we will do the primary
examination. From those children select those who need further treatment or surgery. we plan to bring them to the center and do the required procedure and then drop them to their destination with proper
advice.

1. The cost of surgery comes to around Rs. 25000 Rs for each Retinal case apart from the
General Anesthesia charges. considering approximately 100 to 120 cases in a year, the total
cost will exceed Rs' 25 lakhs'
2. For better screening and monitoring of Retinal surgeries cases, we would like to purchase one RETCAM machine which costs around Rs' 20 lakhs
