At the Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation (SOHF), we recognize that reliable energy access is a cornerstone of sustainable development. The Revive S/East: Go Green – Bio & Solar for Climate initiative was created to address the persistent electricity challenges in Southeastern Nigeria, particularly the frequent NEPA outages that disrupt homes, businesses, and community projects.
Electricity insecurity not only affects daily life but also impedes the operations of crucial initiatives like Samony Wellness Cafeteria Nutrients-densed Fortified Foods and the Samony Food Innovation & Training Hub (FIT-HUB). Without consistent power, production, training, and food processing activities face delays, higher costs, and inefficiencies.
This project aims to deploy bioenergy and solar solutions to ensure clean, reliable, and sustainable energy, transforming communities, enhancing food security, and supporting vocational and entrepreneurial initiatives.
Challenges
During this reporting period, the project team encountered several significant challenges:
• Frequent NEPA outages – Production schedules for the Samony Wellness Cafeteria are often interrupted, affecting the preparation of nutrient-dense fortified foods.
• High operational costs – Diesel generators are expensive, environmentally unfriendly, and insufficient for sustained energy needs.
• Limited funding for renewable energy installations – Solar panels, inverters, and bioenergy systems require upfront capital that has yet to be secured.
• Technical capacity gaps – Ensuring proper installation, maintenance, and monitoring of renewable systems is a critical need.
Despite these hurdles, the team has remained committed to designing practical, scalable, and environmentally friendly energy solutions for Southeastern Nigeria.
Project Activities During This Period
Even in the face of challenges, the team has made progress in:
• Conducting site assessments for solar and bioenergy installations at FIT-HUB and Samony Wellness Cafeteria
• Engaging local engineers and renewable energy experts for technical consultations
• Planning energy-efficient operations for food production, processing, and training activities
• Preparing proposals and fundraising strategies to secure the required funding for project implementation
The goal is to ensure that once operational, the Samony Wellness Cafeteria and FIT-HUB can function without interruption, safely, and sustainably, supporting youth and community empowerment programs.
Impact on Samony Initiatives
Reliable renewable energy will have a direct and transformative impact on SOHF’s programs:
• Samony Wellness Cafeteria Nutrients-densed Fortified Foods – Continuous electricity ensures timely preparation, packaging, and distribution of fortified foods for schools, youth programs, and community outreach.
• Samony Food Innovation & Training Hub (FIT-HUB) – Training sessions, food processing demonstrations, and entrepreneurial skill-building programs will operate without disruption, enabling hands-on learning and skill acquisition.
• Environmental Sustainability – Adoption of bioenergy and solar systems reduces dependence on diesel generators, cutting greenhouse gas emissions and promoting climate-friendly practices.
• Community Resilience – Local communities gain awareness of renewable energy benefits, improving livelihoods, reducing operational costs, and strengthening capacity to withstand energy insecurity.
Looking Ahead: Little by Little Campaign
We are hopeful about the ongoing Little by Little fundraising campaign, which provides an opportunity for supporters to enable the deployment of renewable energy systems.
Contributions during this campaign will directly support:
• Solar and bioenergy installations at FIT-HUB and Samony Wellness Cafeteria
• Energy-efficient equipment and backup systems for uninterrupted operations
• Training programs on renewable energy use and maintenance for staff and community members
• Scaling of food production, training, and community outreach programs
Even small contributions can make a lasting difference, helping SOHF deliver consistent, nutritious foods and vocational training while championing clean energy solutions.
Next Steps
Once funding is received, the project will:
• Begin installation of solar panels and bioenergy systems
• Integrate energy solutions into cafeteria operations and training programs
• Conduct training for staff on operation, safety, and maintenance
• Monitor and evaluate energy system performance to ensure sustainability and efficiency
• Expand the model to additional facilities and communities across Southeastern Nigeria
These steps will ensure that energy insecurity no longer hinders empowerment programs, while simultaneously promoting climate-friendly practices.
Gratitude to Our Supporters
We extend heartfelt appreciation to all donors, supporters, and advocates who understand the critical link between energy access, food security, and youth empowerment.
