Resilience through adversity

Bush fires threatening Nhamacoa Forest
Bush fires threatening Nhamacoa Forest

The past two years have been particularly challenging for Trees4Moz, but our commitment to reforesting the Nhamacoa Forest and supporting local communities remains unwavering. Despite drought, economic setbacks, and national instability, we continue to push forward, adapting to difficulties with resilience and creativity.

Overcoming Drought and Climate Challenges

In 2023, central Mozambique experienced prolonged semi-drought conditions, leading to widespread crop failures and extreme heat. In the Nhamacoa Forest, our thousands of nursery-grown indigenous trees were unable to be planted due to scorching temperatures and lack of rainfall. Our usual water supply—collected in a concrete reservoir—dried up, forcing us to rely on costly borehole water to keep the trees alive.

By 2024, conditions worsened into a full drought. With no reservoir water available, we had to pump from the borehole three to four times a week—an unexpected financial strain. Yet, in the face of these challenges, we remained committed to keeping our nursery alive and preparing for future reforestation efforts.

Navigating National Uncertainty

Mozambique’s 2024 election season brought further disruption, with political tensions leading to widespread protests, road closures, and economic uncertainty. Many of our key sponsors—local businesses and the hospitality industry—were severely impacted, leading to a significant drop in funding for Trees4Moz. With tourism at a standstill, our usual sources of support dwindled just as we needed them most.

Nature’s Unexpected Gifts

With limited resources, we turned to nature for sustenance. A surprising abundance of wild mushrooms emerged in the forest, providing a vital food source for both our team and the local community. As the season changed, mango trees produced an exceptional harvest, allowing us to supplement our diet in a time of need.

Hope for 2025 and Beyond

Despite these difficulties, we remain hopeful. The resilience of both people and nature has been inspiring, and we are determined to continue our reforestation work, expand our community garden, and strengthen our programs. With your support, we can recover, replant, and restore the Nhamacoa Forest—ensuring a greener, more sustainable future for Mozambique.

Join us in making a difference. Your donation will help us plant trees, secure water resources, and support local communities through the challenges ahead.
