This project will establish community-managed tree nurseries in selected Ugandan regions to restore degraded lands, improve livelihoods, and build climate resilience. The nurseries will ensure local, sustainable seedling production while empowering communities through training, ownership, and income diversification. It aligns with national forestry goals and environmental sustainability.
Uganda faces a complex blend of soil erosion, deforestation, desertification, climate-induced disasters, urban waste hazards, and emerging pollution threats. Tackling these requires integrated strategies including community action.. Community nurseries provide access to indigenous and fruit tree seedlings, vital for ecological restoration and reforestation, low-maintenance, soil- and climate-adapted, support biodiversity, and offer better long-term outcomes than non-native specie
Development Alert works with communities to establishing community-based tree nurseries and tree supply systems that play a crucial role in tackling land degradation as it builds the capacity of communities to take the lead in tree seeds selection, nursery establishment, management, and tree planting at the grassroots level. This enables communities to lead grassroots actions aimed to conserve the environment and promote climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.
The project will provide 3000 community members with on hands-on training in nursery establishment and management, establish 10 community-managed nurseries for indigenous, fruit, timber, and medicinal species producing 30,000 seedlings each per year.
