Summary

The average Kenyan wants his family to be healthy and safe. She also has the required agency to make wise choices if given the right tools to do so. When families have access to cloth masks they can stay safe while still living their lives, during COVID19. The Family Cloth Mask Initiative will provide at least 330 vulnerable families with 4000+ cloth face masks plus information on how to wear them, clean them & live with them. Additionally, 6 local women tailors will earn a basic livelihood.

Challenge

It is feared an outbreak will overrun the Kenyan healthcare system. A mainstream reaction to the impending crisis from both government and citizens is the "ordinary" Kenyan is either ignorant or lacks the requisite agency to make his own decisions or just needs to be "pushed" to be "saved". Top-down policy creation is driving our COVID19 response. But experience in other African countries during outbreaks shows us there is an alternative. When people own their prevention the curve is flattened.

Solution

Community ownership has been used successfully in Kenya with HIV and other health epidemics. Today ownership can enhance local level coping skills and develop physical distancing rooted in our context. If we give people a chance to be a part of the solution we will all win. The ordinary Kenyan citizen wants her family to be healthy and safe. By ensuring each family member over 2 years old, has access to 2 cloth masks. The initiative supports people to own their COVID19 prevention.

Long-Term Impact

The project will support at least 330+ vulnerable families, with over 4000 cloth masks to stay safe during the COVID19 virus by providing them with a family set of cloth masks and information on how to use the masks for their families' health and wellbeing.
