Two catastrophic earthquakes hit Turkiye and Syria early on Feb. 6th, 2023, followed by over 1600 aftershocks that took the lives of over 50,000 people and left millions in need. Concern was well-positioned to offer immediate relief to this sudden emergency, distributing blankets, food, water and heaters for emergency shelters. We are working with local partners to ramp up efforts for additional, longer-term support, and your support would help us expand our efforts and further our impact.
In the early hours of Monday, February 6th, 2023, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck in southern Turkiye - immediately followed by 7.5-magnitude tremor 80 miles north. The sudden earthquakes and over 1,600 subsequent aftershocks killed over 50,000 people and left millions in need across Turkiye and Syria. Millions were rendered homeless, and our efforts continue, both in Syria and Turkey to support those left most vulnerable.
The biggest priority is shelter. These have been some of the strongest earthquakes in 100 years, followed by over 1,600 aftershocks that caused widespread devastation, leaving million of people homeless and displaced. Concern Worldwide provides emergency supplies and shelter to those impacted by the two fatal earthquakes, and will stay and continue to expand our efforts to help those affected to recover and rebuild their lives.
This is a region already experiencing instability due to the decade-long refugee crisis in southern Turkiye and northern Syria. This catastrophic event has only exacerbated the problem. A robust, continued humanitarian response will help restore some semblance of stability, save lives and enable relief teams to continue to provide help and hope to the already beleaguered refugee population in the region.
