Thank you very much for supporting the children and teenagers at Refugiu's tutoring and mentoring programme! We are so grateful for your help. GlobalGiving UK recently held the "Little By Little By Little" crowdfunding challenge which many of you took part in. A huge thank you to each person who supported this project, both during the challenge and throughout the year!
Robert, the Head of Refugiu, has sent updates from the project. The school term began well as, with your help, Refugiu was able to provide the children with clothes, shoes, school bags and stationery.
The children have all been making great progress. One little boy, Marius, aged eight, is the second youngest of eleven siblings. He lost his father to cancer three years ago. He has had issues focusing and used to lose his patience easily and did not like going to school very much. He has now been attending Refugiu's programme for a couple of years. Robert has worked a lot with Marius and has seen a big improvement. Robert said "This year, Marius likes school! He goes with pleasure."
Another boy, Leo, aged six, joined Refugiu's programme earlier this year. When he started, he did not even know how to use a pencil. Now Robert says, Leo is "crazy about going to school."
As well as supporting the children with their education, Refugiu also focuses on the social needs of the children and their families. Identity cards are issued when a child reaches fourteen years old. However, many people in the Roma villages lack identity papers. Loredana, one of the girls attending the tutoring programme turned fourteen this year. Refugiu assisted her in getting her identity card. This will ensure she has access to education and health services in the future and is not deprived of her social rights.
A massive thank you to each person who has made it possible to continue this work! Refugiu's programme is funded through our page on GlobalGiving and without you, it would not be possible to give these children a brighter future!
If you would like to continue to help these children over the holiday season, it is possible to make a donation as a gift and send a card (either online or printed). If you would like to give this gift as a present to someone, you can find the "gift or in honour of" option on our project page on GlobalGiving UK.
Thank you so much for all you have done for the children in 2016! Wishing you all the very best for the New Year!
