Tuungane Teen Mums' project seeks to empower the most vulnerable teenage mothers between 13 and 19 years to enable them access economic and educational opportunities through life skills building and mentorship to address consequences of motherhood and to help them continue enjoying the best opportunities of their lives. The project also aims at supporting the babies of the teenage mothers with basic needs during Covid19 pandemic.
Teenage pregnancy has become a major crisis in Kenya with at least 3 in 10 girls are getting pregnant at an early age of 13 years . According to the latest statistics, over 4000 teenage pregnancies have been reported since Covid19 pandemic hit Kenya in March 2020. Kilifi is among the leading counties with cases of teenage pregnancies due to the high poverty level making young girls vulnerable to unsafe sex as they look for alternative sources of food and other basic needs such as pads.
Tuungane Teen Mums' project will empower 30 most vulnerable teenage mothers between 13 and 19 years to enable them access economic and educational opportunities through life skills building and mentorship. They will be taken through a model on how to start and improve their income generating activities as well as being enlightened on basic life skills and how to take care of themselves to avoid unplanned pregnancies in future and how to take care of their children in a more healthy way.
The project will educate 30 teenage mothers on how to start and improve their income generating activities that will result into them being financially independent. They will be empowered through life skills sessions to address consequences of motherhood and to help them continue enjoying the best opportunities of their lives. The project will also offer support to their babies by providing them with basic needs such as food baskets and baby care products such as soap and pampers.
