Since 2012 this fund has educated /trained 26 orphaned and vulnerable youth in the Uthukela District of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Providing education has been recognized as powerful in mitigating factors of orphanhood and poverty. High performing but impoverished or orphaned youth are referred by teachers and local leaders for eligibility. Our experienced, local, multi cultural team awards funding. Each student has a mentor who provides close support and advice, mitigating personal risk.
The towns and informal tribal areas covered by this project are marked by high unemployment and challenged community cohesion. Impoverished families, orphaned or foster children with caretakers are typically unable to afford tertiary education or training for an independent future. Migration to large cities in search of low skill jobs drains community assets and talent.
Providing funding for tertiary training or university ensures motivated, ambitious high school learners will be qualified to enter the job market, thereby providing income for them and their families. Advocacy by our network of mentors improves the chance for a job in a chronically high unemployment ethos.
50- 75 youth will acquire skills enabling them to be productively employed, thereby supporting family or foster-peer network. Close mentoring and family-like support hopefully contributes to their return to this rural area, thereby greatly improving local stability and upward development.
