The Udaan shelter home offers a place to live for women survivors of trafficking. There, they meet their needs for accommodation, food, health, education, leisure activities and legal aid. They receive trainings to acquire skills and become self-sufficient: they resume their education, develop professional skills, learn their rights and prepare to work and successfully reintegrate into society. They also receive empowerment and counselling sessions to help them improve their mental health.
One of our priority programs is the fight against human trafficking, one of the most lucrative illicit industries, terribly harmful for the most vulnerable people. The most frequent destination of its victims, especially women and girls, is sexual exploitation. Each year, more than half a million are trafficked for this purpose, that is, one every 60 seconds. We work comprehensively against trafficking, implementing prevention programs, and also fighting to rescue and rehabilitate survivors.
For these women, who have been exploited, mistreated and abused for years, the Udaan shelter home becomes their home, a safe place located in a peaceful and quiet environment on the outskirts of Mumbai. There, they receive the help and support they need to rehabilitate and rebuild themselves. Their basic needs are covered, and they receive trainings, counselling sessions, and life skill empowerment activities. They build their new future with dignity and freedom.
The shelter home welcomes a total of 6 women, 3 of them accompanied by their children. One of them is a baby of a few months who was born after his mother had already been admitted. The ultimate goal of the project is to ensure that they can leave behind the harsh experiences they have had. We want them to recover mentally and emotionally, and at the same time develop the ability to earn a living with dignity, and free from exploitation and abuse.
