The Blue Atlas Project has pioneered a spirulina project in Uganda. We have built a farm with an innovative approach to fighting hunger and malnutrition with carbon sequestering algae. The Spirulina Development Institute (SDI) is a multi-phase project that will built a sustainable farm to grow spirulina, which has a complete nutritional profile. We are partnering with schools and hospitals to provide this superfood to help children lead healthy and full lives.
According to the 2016 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey, 29% of Uganda's children under the age of five are stunted, 4% wasted and only 15% children in Uganda ate a minimally acceptable diet. Also, 53% of Ugandan children ages 6-59 months and 32% of women population of age 15-49 were anaemic which is a major concern that leads to increased maternal and child mortality and poor birth outcomes. Malnutrition kills many Ugandans. One in every 16 children dies before their fifth birthday.
Blue Atlas (BA) believes that by pioneering spirulina through the Spirulina Development Institute (SDI), we are building locally-led and climate smart solution to help stop the lasting impacts that malnutrition has. We will encourage wider consumption through hospital and school partnerships. These partnerships provide hard data, which is key to taking this effective intervention to scale and be able to reach all vulnerable populations. To that end we have developed
BA is overseeing the partnership and sustainability growth plan and will scale SDI to reach children across Uganda. Through partnerships with the Ministry of Health, Universities, hospitals and NGO partners. The long-term impact is alleviating the conditions and illnesses that malnutrition cause. Ensuring greater physical, mental and emotional health, while utilizing spirulina's carbon sequestering abilities to combat GHG's.
