Challenge

Imagine deciding between feeding your children or educating them. The population in Kenya, East Africa, is both growing and young. Almost 1 out of 3 Kenyans is below age 10. Chronic malnutrition affects 33% of children under age 5. Often children are pulled from school until after a harvest of cash crops can be sold to pay school expenses such as a uniform. School meals make it possible for children to stay in school to learn, contributing to their brighter future.

Solution

1.Health Gains: This project will improve the health of 1,000+ disadvantaged school children and youth in Kenya. Proper and adequate nutrition prevents illness. 2. Academic Performance: When children are no longer hungry they can focus in school, which influences their capacity to learn. 3.Skills Training: Youth will train in fish farming, a developing economic sector. 4.Small Scale Sustainable Enterprise: Excess production will generate revenues to decrease future donor dependence.

Long-Term Impact

Fish is an excellent source of protein and vitamins that promotes good health. Healthy school children are able to participate fully in their school day. Students at partner schools in Kenya achieve in the top quartile on national exams. Your support ensures a brighter future for these school children to develop into healthy, productive members of their communities.
