Peacebuilding UK: Trauma Relief Community Outreach

Summary

The requirement for powerful evidence-based trauma relief programmes has never been greater. Recent devastating incidents in the UK has created an ever-growing population of people urgently requiring stress and trauma relief: the terror attacks in Manchester, London Bridge, Westminster and now the Grenfell Tower Disaster have left numerous communities exposed to the pervasive and long-lasting impacts of deep trauma. The Peacebuilding Unit of IAHV is committed to offering relief to these groups.

Challenge

Survivors of both man-made and natural disasters often require a complex mixture of support to alleviate the severe physical, psychological and emotional impacts from the trauma they have experienced. Material help alone, albeit important, is not sufficient. At present there is an urgent need to fund our Peacebuilding activity in the UK to cover expenses required to train more volunteers, broaden our outreach and offer more trauma relief programmes for all those affected.

Solution

Effective long-lasting victim support includes: instilling stress & trauma management techniques; teaching healthy coping strategies; establishing strong community bonds and reinforcing a sense of personal agency. This allows "victims" to reclaim their lives by shifting attention away from reliving the trauma towards the positive future possibilities before them as a survivor. This campaign will help establish victim support units in Manchester & London offering trauma relief & survivor support

Long-Term Impact

The IAHV approach creates results with simple, yet powerful non-invasive practices offering highly effective, evidence-based trauma relief. Most importantly, the process does not make people dependent on drugs or external support, dramatically reducing health care costs. Emphasis is on teaching easy to learn techniques which survivors practice daily creating self-reliance. Independent research shows a 60-90% reduction rate for post-traumatic stress, clinical depression, and anxiety disorder.
