Due to repeated inquiries and requests from numerous partners during past disasters (eg. Typhoon Haiyan) for us to help affected families in Ukraine, we are launching a Sanitation and Food Security Project focusing on Ukraine citizens who have taken refuge in neighboring countries and in Ukraine itself, if safety conditions permit. We will partner with others and focus on sanitation and the growing of vegetables and bringing in our expertise in past disaster in Nepal and in the Philippines .
The war in Ukraine has resulted to massive disenfranchisement of Ukrainians. The situation is dire and food security and sanitation is a big problem. With nothing to do and with little economic support, there is a tendency for them to succumb to depression. Backyard vegetable gardening is one of the best solutions since it offers multiple benefits namely, exercise, food, nutrition, income and improved mental conditions. Coupled with this will be implementation of emergency latrines in camps.
Vegetable gardening is therapeutic as one becomes happy and satisfied seeing plants grow. Aside from the tremendous health benefits, gardening also provides food, nutrition, income and food security to affected families who are often dependent on food amelioration. We will bring to bear innovative techniques like the practice of square-foot gardening, bokashi, composting, production of organic concoctions, soil-less culture and many more via volunteers and using social media.
Improvement in the lives, physical and mental health, nutrition and food security of families affected by the war in Ukraine is achieved by the simple backyard home gardening activities. Coupled with this will be the implementation of latrines in emergency setting. We aim to promote the development of affected families and improve their food sources and sanitation for overall well-being..
