Summary

Imagine growing up in a country that only 20 years ago came out of a brutal armed conflict, but never learning about your past at school or talking about it at home? In this challenging context, everyday the Exhibition "Why are we the way we are?" is working to break this silence.

Challenge

Most young people never learn about the brutal genocide the indigenous population of Guatemala faced during 36 years of armed conflict. A culture of silence remains in Guatemala perpetuated by a state that prefers amnesty for war criminals rather than justice for its victims.

Solution

Our exhibition creates a unique space for students and teachers to learn about the past and reflect on the discrimination and racial tension that still exists in our everyday lives. It is through this social dialogue that we can create a fairer and more equal society.

Long-Term Impact

A visit to the Exhibition "Why are we the way we are?" strengthens the capacity of young people to think critically about their society and encourages them to work collaboratively to identify solutions for the future.
