This project will bring together 5 small scale farmers' groups to multiply 5 Neglected and Underutilized food species to improving family nutrition and availability of food through out the year. These foods have a high nutritive value yet they are ignored as contributors to food security. They will be deliberately multiplied in community seed banks and promoted in 2 selected communities in Northern and Eastern Uganda through publications, community dialogues and food preparation learning events.
Communities in Northern Uganda and Eastern Uganda are endowed with a variety of food species that are becoming extinct despite their high nutritious value and food security potential. The population of northern Uganda is around 5.8 M and Far Eastern is approximately 1.8 M yet their grains, legumes and cereals harvests are delayed and low due to delayed rains hence chronic droughts and food insecurity, which consequently results in malnutrition.
The 5 Neglected and underutilized species selected are highly nutritious and yet resilient to adverse effects of weather changes. They can withstand heat conditions and are pest resistant hence high yields and resilience. It will solve the problem of food insecurity and malnutrition in the families. Communities will be able to consume healthy nutritious food and it will be available all year round.Healthy families, healthy productive communities.
The 200 farmers' families will have healthy food secure families hence they will be able to engage in other productive activities. Children will not be stunted anymore and their well being will be improved.
