Supporting Black students into Science and Tech

By Tony Sewell | Supporting black students into science and Tech

Aim of this report

The aim of this report is to document the impact that Generating Genius has achieved for students from BAME and disadvantaged backgrounds through the funding and support given through the ongoing partnership with Kilburn and Strode.

This will be shown by

  • Measuring Generating Genius’s impact against the original proposal
  • Recording the number of students benefited
  • Models of Learning for the future

STEM in Action events

STEM in Action is a supplemental, module-based curriculum for students in Year 8 – 13.  It demonstrates how successfully STEM subjects can be combined with Citizenship and harnesses the power of hands-on learning to inspire curiosity and nurture critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Sessions include designing a bunker that can withstand a meteorite strike to the Earth and planning how to successfully deploy a team of scientists to Mars.

University visits

Generating Genius organised University visits to St Anne’s College Oxfordiof the programme. Students and their parents were taken to the campus and engaged in a day of campus tours, Q&A’s and STEM activities.

.

Visits to Peterhouse College Cambridge, Leeds University and UCL were deliveredGG ran events (scientific enquiry, information evenings and Challenge Days)

GG ran events included:

  • Introduction to networking event (GG ran event)
  • Interpersonal Skills session with Latymer Upper School (GG ran event)
  • How to get into accountancy and finance (GG ran event)
  • Uni Genius Launch Evening
  • Ethics of Robotic Surgery Debate Session
  • Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology revision sessions
  • Work Experience Prep sessions – this is where we give tips and tricks to students regarding their work experience placements
  • Uni Genius Social
  • Uni Genius Speed Networking Events

Masterclass / Tutorial days

Masterclass/Tutorial Days were aimed to inspire students by showing the practical applications of STEM in the world. These were delivered using the expertise from businesses and universities mentioned included below:

  • L'Oreal Young Scientist Centre - Colour Chemistry Masterclass
  • Latymer Upper School GCSE Maths Masterclass
  • Queen Mary UoL Wearable Technology Masterclass
  • Can Earth Handle More Megacities? Masterclass at Pimlico Academy

Summer of STEM events

Summer of STEM a pick & mix summer of activities with academic content to continue students learning over the summer.

From accessible records in Year 1, GG delivered at least 2 out of the 4 events:

  • STEM Ambassadors evening (hosted at Buzzacott)
  • Science of Banknotes at the Bank of England

Tutoring

GG organised 420 hours of tutoring for 50 students for the Academic Tutoring in Physics, Maths, Biology. Each of the students attended 1-2 sessions each with private tutors at their school. Many students noted that this was helpful in preparation for their exams. We hope to be able to offer more academic support to students who continue onto our Uni Genius programme.

The original 50 students are now beginning Year 12 and are joining the Uni Genius programme.  Currently, all students have remained a part of the programme until this year. We are currently accepting students into our Uni Genius programme and will track the number of students who choose other A-level paths or do not have grades that we can progress into the A-level programme.

Conclusion

The funding from GlobalGiving was incredibly effective in helping us to have sustained impact for our students across the year. Through the support we have given our students, they have grown in confidence by being in corporate settings, adjusting to traveling through London for sessions and being engaged in difficult tasks that many of their school peers are yet to encounter.

Student Testimonials

“Overall I would like to thank the Uni Genius programme for really helping me gain an opportunity such as this.” – Sarah

“Generating Genius motivated me to work harder because I saw that there are a lot of smart people that I’m competing against.” – Israel

“Doing work experience  gave me confidence that I needed to take opportunities that come my way.” – Qaid

Future Plans

Generating Genius wishes to expand our impact through supporting another cohort of students to progress, however we wish to begin the programme in Year 12 to support students through their A-levels and into university. We have identified that our students lack support needed at university, including financial challenges, lack of internship opportunities and career opportunities post university. We will continue to support this current cohort of students by focusing on their post-16 and university progression. We appreciate the support and funding given by GlobalGiving  and wish to continue collaborating to raise the next generation of STEM talent.
