Summary 14 million new cases of cancer and 8 million cancer-related deaths were reported worldwide in 2012, 20 million cases may occur by 2025. 44% of the cancer cases and 53% of the cancer deaths occur in countries at a low or medium level of the HDI. Worldwide, at the end of 2012, almost 32.6 million people diagnosed with cancer within the past five years were alive. Research and innovation are the keys to increase the survival rates and the quality of life of persons with cancer.
48 million Swiss francs were requested in 2014 for research at the Swiss Cancer Research foundation. This organization invested approximately 23 million francs in funding to support 169 patient-oriented cancer research projects. Unfortunately, as the financial means are limited, not all of the submitted high-quality research projects can be funded, even though the Swiss Cancer Research foundation's scientific panel judged them to be of high quality and worthy of receiving support!
By supporting our engagement, you directly finance patient-centred-research: research that brings as much direct benefit to patients as possible. By funding cancer research, you help examine the causes of cancer and reduce the cancer risk in the overall population. You help study how cancer cells develop and spread in the body. You help develop better diagnostic methods and enhance treatments. You help improve the quality of life of persons with cancer and their families.
By funding high-quality, peer-reviewed projects, you support the entire broad range of cancer research: basic, clinical, psychosocial and epidemiologic. This research is independent of any commercial interest and benefits each patient in the world. The advances achieved in the context of individual independent research projects, even if they may seem small, make success clearly visible over the long term. Joining the forces for a better world with less suffering due to cancer, you save lives.
