Summary 14 million new cases of cancer and 8 million cancer-related deaths were reported worldwide in 2012, 20 million cases may occur by 2025. 44% of the cancer cases and 53% of the cancer deaths occur in countries at a low or medium level of the HDI. Worldwide, at the end of 2012, almost 32.6 million people diagnosed with cancer within the past five years were alive. Research and innovation are the keys to increase the survival rates and the quality of life of persons with cancer.
48 million Swiss francs were requested in 2014 for research at the Swiss Cancer Research foundation. This organization invested approximately 23 million francs in funding to support 169 patient-oriented cancer research projects. Unfortunately, as the financial means are limited, not all of the submitted high-quality research projects can be funded, even though the Swiss Cancer Research foundation's scientific panel judged them to be of high quality and worthy of receiving support!
