Contact with the criminal justice system imposes a range of risks to individuals that are perceived to be, or who identify as sexual minorities who include Lesibians Gay Bisexual, Transgender Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ). This is irrespective of whether they are brought into contact with the law as victims, witnesses, or individuals accused or proven as having committed a crime.
Human Rights First Rwanda Association conducted a study that unearthed that LGBTIQ persons during this COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns are at increased risk of physical and sexual violence, and that in most cases sexual orientation and gender identity is a key factor in the perpetration of the abuse. Despite such high rates of victimization, violence against LGBTIQ individuals is often severely not reported.
It is against this background that Human Rights First Rwanda Association organized a series of legal and Human Rights empowerment workshops with the LGBTIQ community to empower them on law and their Human rights and how to document and report cases of violence.
