Challenge

Many communities in California lack sufficient access to fresh healthy foods, and often these underserved communities are known as "food deserts" in inner-city neighborhoods and rural communities. Often in urban communities, they live greater than one mile, & greater than ten miles for rural citizens, as defined by USDA from quality grocery stores. Our residents end up buying from lessor quality stores, and from closer fast-food spots & become a target for poor health and unsafe eating habits.

Solution

This project will address 1. Proximity-placing numerous local gardens & farms less than a mile in Los Angeles urban community areas for families to reach and have access to. 2. Choices-providing opportunities for families to grow organic food they want, where they will be taught how to grow, compost, & make better health habits. 3. Affordable-our gardens & farms are free to local community members because quality food should also be affordable. Our project saves lives through fresh food.

Long-Term Impact

Our project begins with training 140 families on how to grow their own food, compost, & how to grow from poverty to sustainable. This project will multiply by assisting more families in need, creating multiple local community garden/farm sites in neighborhoods where they need it most. Our program slows the harmful cycle of food insecurities by offering our local communities higher-quality fresh food access, & a greater quality of life.
