Water for Darfur in 2016

Fetching water in Darfur
Fetching water in Darfur

Water is the first priority and desperately needed in Darfur.   Thank you to all of you who responded to our urgent appeal for Jerry Cans for families in Darfur in 2015.  You have literally saved lives where families had to flee their homes with nothing.  The first priority was to make sure they had some way of collecting water.   Thanks to you we were able to give each family two jerry cans.   Having lived in the camps now for months many have asked to settle in Kids for Kids’ villages, as their own homes no longer exist.   We are asking for help to give these families the basic essentials for establishing a home for their children.    Our new project on Global Giving is to help these families:  https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/new-hope-for-idps-joining-kids-for-kids-villages/

Update on Life in Darfur at the start of 2016

Sadly 2016 really is the year when I am going to have to find every means possible to raise as much money as I can.   The last two years have seen the exodus of virtually every aid agency from the region.  Already violence has been extreme.  Over 270 vehicles attacked villages in South Darfur in the first four days of January.   This will have an impact throughout the region.   Even worse, the harvest has been disappointing, less than  30% of what was hoped for in many regions – places where children were already malnourished.   I fear for the families of Darfur.  You can see Kids for Kids has a lot to do.   Please can you tell people how tragic life is for these poor people.   These children really are forgotten.

Water is the essence of life.  This is why we are continuing to work as hard as we can with our team in Darfur to keep delivering our Kids for Kids water projects - from emergency Jerry Cans to long term projects like Hand Pumps and water harvesting training.  If you can help us provide a handpump close to a village you will not only help us provide water, but you will be saving women and children from the risk of attack on their long walks for water across the deserts of Darfur.    And there is an additional benefit – with water close at hand, children can go to school every day.   This will transform their lives.   We have a water projects page right here on Global Giving that you can support to keep us going:  https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/water-for-children-in-darfur/

You will be saving lives, and enabling children to have a childhood instead of walking for water each day.

Thank you so much for your support, and may I wish you a happy, healthy and peaceful 2016.
