Summary

In rural Darfur villages where leaders are usually men, an income gives women freedom of choice and decision-making ability for their families. Our sustainable projects - Goat Loans, Donkeys and Midwife & Paravet training - give women a voice. Soap, Mosquito Nets and Blankets protect from illness. Your help enables women to build better, life-changing futures for themselves and their children. Our training programs will resume as soon as there is stability in Darfur.

Challenge

Without any form of income, women in rural villages of Darfur, Sudan are not respected or treated as equals and do not have a say on any village matters. With no money they have no power over their own lives. Children suffer because the family cannot afford to send them to school, so the cycle of poverty continues. Food insecurity is common across Darfur. Healthcare has virtually collapsed across the country due to the ongoing conflict. How must a mother feel when she cannot feed her children?

Solution

Income is the key to empowering women. Goat Loans mean women can sell milk, yogurt, and male kid goats. This is their first income ever, allowing them to make decisions and ensure a better future for themselves and their children. Women can then afford to send their children to school. Training women as Midwives & Paravets gives them income and status in their village, as does owning a household item - even a blanket - they are so poor. Blankets, Mosquito Nets and Soap protect from illness.

Long-Term Impact

We will never adopt a village unless the community fully supports the empowerment of women. Giving a woman the tools and resources to earn an income will change her life, and in the long-term, change the lives of future generations, ending the poverty cycle. Our sustainable projects bring a huge positive transformation to the village and benefit more and more women over time. We have adopted 110 villages so far. As soon as it is safe to do so we will adopt more villages.
