Lifesaving Medical Support for Vulnerable Afghans

Twenty years of service in Afghanistan:

As FMIC enters its twentieth anniversary year, we continue to provide essential and often lifesaving medical care to vulnerable families across Afghanistan, including returnees who face severe barriers to accessing healthcare. Although we have not received project-specific donations during this reporting period, our commitment to supporting patients in need remains steadfast.

Impact Through the Patient Welfare Programme

Between January and March 2026, FMIC supported 17,159 patients through the Patient Welfare Programme, including:

2,536 inpatients receiving advanced and emergency care
14,623 outpatients benefiting from essential consultations
1.14 million USD disbursed in financial assistance
Patients from all 34 provinces, with many arriving from remote and underserved regions

Since FMIC’s establishment, the programme has supported approximately 900,000 patients, with cumulative assistance exceeding 64 million USD.

The Urgent Need for Specialized Care for Afghanistan's Newest Arrivals

The Current Need: A Crisis of Return

As thousands of Afghan families return to the country, many arrive in extremely fragile states, having traveled long distances with limited access to food, water, or shelter. These families, particularly children and pregnant women, are at high risk for acute illnesses, malnutrition, and complications from untreated chronic conditions. FMIC stands as a ray of hope to address such gaps in tertiary care services.

FMIC: A Proven Infrastructure of Hope

While this specific project is awaiting its first funding milestone, the French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children (FMIC) stands ready to mobilize immediately. Our institution has nearly two decades of experience delivering high-quality, equitable care in challenging and fragile settings.

Our facility is equipped with:

176 Beds: A capacity that allows for a full continuum of care, from emergency services to intensive care.
Multidisciplinary Expertise: A team of highly trained Afghan and international professionals specialized in cardiology, orthopedics, neonatology, pediatrics, nurology, Obstetrics/Gyn and many more.
Advanced Technology: State-of-the-art laboratories and diagnostics, including CT and MRI, to provide accurate and rapid treatment for returning families.

A Track Record of Reaching the Vulnerable

FMIC has a long history of serving those that other systems cannot reach. We have already completed over 2.3 million patient visits and performed over 59,000 surgeries. Our robust Patient Welfare Program has already supported nearly 850,000 indigent patients with over $62 million USD in subsidies.

This demonstrates that we have the integrity, the governance, and the clinical systems in place to ensure that every dollar donated to the "Returning Families" project will be used efficiently and effectively.

Why Your Support is Needed Now

The infrastructure is ready, and the doctors are in place. What is missing is the dedicated funding to cover the costs for these specific returning families who arrive with nothing.

Provide immediate emergency screenings specially for children and mothers.
Perform life-saving surgeries for returnees with congenital or acute conditions.
Utilize our teleradiology and telemedicine network to support returnees in remote or underserved border areas.
