Urgent Relief Aid to war survivors in east DRCongo

The last three months have been the worst for thousands of war victims in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

In both South Kivu and North Kivu Provinces we have witnessed the intensification of fighting mainly between the rebels of AFC/M23 backed by Rwanda and the Government forces which led to the displacement of thousands of people, especially those who fear to cohabit with the rebels.

And as it is observed, many people are in areas which are had to reach inside the country where do not exist humanitarian actors, and on top of that we have observed some relief aid organizations closing their offices completely and leaving the country.

Thousands of war victims are in areas which are not covered by the Cameras that is why we cannot have their pictures, that is why you cannot find reports anywhere about the situation of these victims but they are there living in dire situation and depending highly on the solidarity of host communities where they are living now.

While we have been without funding in order to intervene, we have not closed our hands, we have worked closely with the host communities in order to promote solidarity among people and to share whatever is available mainly in the sector of Mwenga, Shabunda, and Kabambare in South Kivu, and also in the Kalemie Tanganyika Province.

On top of that we have active in advocacy in order to involved local leaders and for the first Tanganyika Provincial Parliament organized a special session on the situation of war victims in the province and made strong recommendations to the Executive to mobilize all actors in order to help the victims.

We have also documented and shared in social media the deteriorating situation of the war victims in Camps and those who are not yet in camps.

The urgent needs for the war victims remain: Food, Shelter, Medical Care, Education and home issues.

We have also been calling upon the support but as per now no positive responses have been observed.

Struggling sometimes alone and with limited funds to address the humanitarian crisis in Tanganyika Province and in Kalemie city in particular

Since February 2025, the humanitarian situation in this city deteriorated because of the influx of war victims from Kivu, the city and the province was not prepared at all to handle this new challenge up to now we remain the only local initiative calling upon all actors to get involved in order to solve the problem.

After managing to contain Cholera which was done later yet it had claimed lives of so many people in Kalemie, other urgent needs are also coming up. Hunger is now taking lives of the war victims alongside curable diseases which are not managed up to now. Cases of malnutrition among vulnerable women and children are alarming now, we are now approaching the raining season which is likely to see the rise of Cholera cases again and the war victims have no shelters.

We have engaged the media to report and now the situation is being reported by the local media, we have engaged the survivors to speak up and show the situation and now at least we can hear some during the interviews with the media, and attending meetings were they present the situation in their camps.

We have engaged the Department in charge of humanitarian affairs and together have agreed on the necessity to hold a round-table focusing on political actors in the province and now we are talking to the Central Government especially the department in-charge of reparation of the victims.  

Among the camps at least now, Kikongo in Katanika II is shortly receiving some form of relief aid such as access to water, food, public toilets, shelters and mobile clinic through the support from the Belgium Embassy in the Democratic Republic of Congo. But all the other three remaining camps have no hope at all.

Let us mention that the situation can be managed and we are able to make the necessary impact if we are supported financially. So far local leaders are willing to provide the land where camps should be constructed.

We need to mobilize the local communities in order to show more solidarity, the local leaders (cultural leaders, religious leaders, the Civil Society, the local leaders, opinion leaders, the media, government institutions, political leaders, the private sectors) among others for humanitarian interventions and once this is done, we shall be able to see the desired change.

Such activities needs field work and meetings, dialogues, workshops in order to change the attitudes and mindset of people, but at the same time intervene directly in order to save the situation.
