An update on your donation to the 2023 Midwest and Southeast US Tornado Relief Fund

By Victoria Mendez | Senior Associate, Disaster Response

The 2023 tornado season in the United States posed unprecedented challenges. With an extraordinary number of tornadoes reported, it was one of the most active tornado seasons in decades. This year’s outbreak of tornadoes unfortunately left a trail of damage and resulted in tragic fatalities across seven states, with lives lost in Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, and Mississippi. Thanks to your generosity, many individuals have received essential assistance, including food, emergency supplies, medical care, and shelter.

In total, the 2023 Midwest and Southeast US Tornado Relief Fund powered ten grants to eight vetted, community-led nonprofit organizations at the forefront of this crisis across many affected states. At this time, GlobalGiving has finalized all grants from this fund.

Here is a description of the critical work you’ve supported:

  • SBP (St. Bernard Project) extended FEMA appeals training to community leaders and local nonprofit partners to empower them with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively navigate the FEMA appeals process. It also connected with local nonprofits with resources to support best practices in disaster recovery, collaborated with government leaders to provide guidance for immediate and long-term decisions, and advocated for federal funding for tornado relief and recovery. SBP worked closely with community leaders to provide disaster case management training and launched a campaign offering post-disaster recovery resources to aid survivors in avoiding recovery pitfalls, particularly in Mississippi.
  • The Southern Poverty Law Center’s work is centered on advancing human rights for communities that have long been marginalized and excluded. Through this lens, the organization has been very active in immediate relief and long-term recovery efforts across various Mississippi towns that were badly affected by this year’s tornadoes, including Rolling Fork, Winona, Silver City, and Amory. Its ongoing efforts revolve around providing capacity support to its nonprofit partners on the frontlines of essential tasks such as cleanup, rebuilding, offering temporary housing for displaced individuals, and addressing fundamental everyday needs like food, water, and clothing

As a reminder, you can view our first update to all supporters of this fund here.

Your support of the 2023 Midwest and South US Tornado Relief Fund is advancing community-led relief and recovery, and it means people received critical resources to help their community rebuild after the 2023 tornado season.

This fund is now closed and is longer accepting donations. This will be the last fund report of this kind from our team. We hope you’ll stay in touch!

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
