Challenge

Youth in urban areas of Kogi, Benue and Nasarawa State, middle-belt region of Nigeria face high risks of crime, gang recruitment, and conflict. Dense population, unemployment, and peer pressure increase vulnerability to theft, robbery, and violence. Many children lack safe spaces to socialize, learn, or develop skills, leaving them exposed to negative influences and limited opportunities for personal growth.

Solution

The project creates safe spaces for youth to play soccer while learning life skills. Coaches provide mentorship on teamwork, respect, conflict resolution, and decision-making. Sessions also include guidance on staying safe, avoiding gangs, and healthy habits. By engaging youth in structured sports and positive activities, the program reduces crime exposure and encourages long-term skill development.

Long-Term Impact

Youth gain confidence, discipline, and social skills that reduce vulnerability to crime. Regular engagement through soccer and mentorship strengthens positive peer networks, improves behavior, and opens pathways to education or work. Communities benefit from lower youth crime rates, stronger social cohesion, and empowered young people making constructive life choices.
