Dear Friends,
Annually, thousands of families in the Philippines are displaced by volcanoes, typhoons, fires, and floods. This year, just before the new school year begins, the El Nino weather pattern is causing flooding and mudslides in areas usually only impacted by typhoons later in the season.
Our Asia America Initiative teams, with local partners doing most of the heavy labor, are making an incredible difference. “The values that AAI teaches everyone are the importance of consistency, loyalty, and transparency, encouraging us all to work together as one large family,” says Dr. Merhama, school head of Salih Yusah public elementary school.
Asia America Initiative and our partners provide emergency food, water, tarp shelters, blankets, hygiene, face masks, and basic health care items for displaced families and first responders. "Our parents and volunteer fire fighters and police do the labor alongside our pupils' parents," says Doc Mer. "It is a joy to work together for our children's benefit and progress."
The United Nations has named the Philippines as the most hard-hit country by natural disasters. We encourage families to stay in their hometowns and rebuild. The schools are the center of the community and children are a unifying bond between parents and neighbors. Communities turn to their schools as temporary shelters after disasters, so we help to keep them in good condition.
