As 2021 begins, Volmoed Retreat Center continues to operate in the challenging times of Covid-19. We had hoped to transition to more normal operations but this was not to be.
The second wave of Covid-19 in South Africa has brought a virulent new variant of the virus to the country. We were placed back on lockdown level 3 before Christmas and this has once again affected our income stream, as expected income decreased due to cancelations of group bookings and slow individual bookings.
The Volmoed staff continue to work at reduced 60% salaries and 3 days/week. It is a struggle and sacrifice for them, but they remain a dedicated team.
Thanks to the donations, Volmoed was able to help staff with particular needs. Two staff had deaths in their families and their transport home for the funerals was paid. Another had a son’s wedding and was given money to provide a small celebration. Staff phones were topped up with airtime and data.
When unemployment funds ended, staff were provided with a small end-of-year bonus. The staff support fund also provided extra vegetables and maize so staff could feed their families.Project reports on GlobalGiving are posted directly to globalgiving.org by Project Leaders as they are completed, generally every 3-4 months.
