Summary

SAM - The Samaritan Day Care & Kindergarten and SPS - the Samaritan Primary School are modern early learning centres for vulnerable and underprivileged children aged 6 months to 12 years on our campus. We develop each child's early educational and social skills within a healthy and stimulating environment in our purpose built facilities. Their parents - often vulnerable young single mothers - are given support whilst we educate and care for their child. Our motto is "From Hopeless to Hopeful."

Challenge

Uganda has a young population- the majority are under 18. For a variety of reasons many find themselves thrust into early parenthood and have few or no resources to help their own child develop the early educational and social skills that are so vital to equip them for school and adulthood. Whilst the government tries to ensure each child has access to primary education there are no provisions for preschool education and many children begin primary school lacking any literacy skills.

Solution

Our schools provide a range of developmental activities and care tailored to the needs of each child. SAM focuses on educational games and early language and reading skills, preparing for their transition to our primary school, SPS. Here the focus is on developing each child to reach their full potential and progress to secondary education. Our sponsorship programme pays the school fees for the most vulnerable children, and they and their parents benefit from all our modern campus facilities.

Long-Term Impact

The support we provide to vulnerable young parents and their children helps build healthy and stable families in which each member and all generations have the opportunity to develop and unlock their potential. In addition to our schools, the campus provides facilities for vocational training and sport. Our clinic, the 'Jjanda Medical Centre', provides medical care and health education for our students, their families and the community. All this improves living standards in the local population.
