WASH & Electrification in Rural Health Clinics

Pre-construction logistics and procurement for the health clinic in Manambaro were completed in July 2025, with full construction already underway since August. This project represents a significant step forward in strengthening WASH infrastructure and improving access to quality healthcare in the region.

The Manambaro site includes the repair of six latrine cubicles, the construction of a Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) facility, and the installation of a 10,000-litre rainwater harvesting system. The facility is also being fitted with solar electrification, and all health clinic staff will undergo training using the Ministry of Health’s WASH curriculum.

In response to damage sustained during Tropical Storm Jude in March 2025, the roof at the Manambaro health clinic is receiving structural reinforcements and anti-cyclone measures to ensure greater climate resilience.

Following valuable feedback from clinic staff, SEED is also upgrading the design of solar systems at all past and future health clinic sites. These enhancements include electric lighting and charging capacity for phones, laptops, and other essential devices, ensuring that both staff and community members benefit from improved functionality and energy access.

In support of these goals, SEED’s implementing partner Jiro-Ve has confirmed that in October 2025, new solar energy systems will be installed at the health clinics in Ankilivalo and Manambaro, with an additional system upgrade planned for the health clinic in Ambinanibe.

Further expansion is already in motion. Plans for a third health clinic at Volobe Sud have now been completed. This new facility will feature solar electrification, a 10,000-litre rainwater harvesting tank, a dedicated MHM facility, and both the repair of existing latrines and construction of new ones, ensuring comprehensive WASH access from the outset.

In January, we shared news of exciting momentum at Ambinanibe CSB. Construction was nearing completion, and final preparations were underway for the next clinic site. Since then, SEED has celebrated major milestones and responded to unexpected challenges, demonstrating the strength and adaptability of this project and the communities it serves.

In early February, construction at Ambinanibe CSB officially concluded. The centre is now equipped with five new latrines, a menstrual hygiene management and shower facility, a handwashing station with running water, a 10,000-litre rainwater harvesting system, and a solar energy system that ensures lighting and power, even during emergencies. These improvements have already begun to transform day-to-day care at the centre, giving staff the resources to keep the facility clean, safe, and functional for patients.

To help these changes last, SEED supported the delivery of the Ministry of Health’s WASH Education Curriculum to the CSB staff and helped establish a WASH committee to oversee ongoing hygiene and maintenance. Educational sessions were also held with patients and caregivers, ensuring that new infrastructure is matched with new habits that promote consistent health.

In March, a joyful handover ceremony brought together local leadership, Ministry of Health representatives, and SEED staff to officially celebrate the completed upgrades. But just days later, Cyclone Jude swept through the region. Manambaro CSB, the next site in line for upgrades, was directly hit. The storm tore off its roof and flooded the facility, interrupting services and forcing staff to act quickly to protect supplies and continue supporting patients under difficult conditions.

In the face of this setback, the response has been swift and determined. SEED’s construction team immediately adapted its plans for Manambaro, incorporating a cyclone-resistant roof and more resilient structural elements to prevent similar damage in the future. With funding secured and materials already on site, construction at Manambaro is now ready to begin.

At the same time, planning and purchasing for Ankilivalo CSB continues. While Manambaro required emergency adaptation, SEED remains committed to reaching every site outlined in the project’s scope and ensuring that each one receives the same standard of care and thoughtful construction.
