Challenge

Fiji faces waste management challenges that derive from unregulated waste disposal in the ocean and on land. Moreover, in certain areas, waste management is conducted by burning harmful materials such as plastic, which causes carcinogenic toxins that affect humans. This has been identified by the department of environment as a major concern as it can negatively impact public health, the environment, food security, tourism and trade.

Solution

In collaboration with Fiji's Ministry of Health, the program supports recycling stations with the assistance from local communities. Additionally, community leaders facilitate environmental sessions such as recycling workshops. Furthermore, the amount of waste collected is tracked with the aim to manage the program effectively.

Long-Term Impact

The project works on waste management initiatives that can potentially affect the regulations and policy of the country whilst promoting wasteless behaviour. Well managed waste disposal increases the economic development of communities in Fiji, like increasing economic activity from tourism, leading to employment opportunities, and can also improve and reduce financial constraints.
