Each year, more than half of North America's bird species migrate to (or through) Central America. You can help protect them in Nicaragua and El Salvador by giving to this project. There, we want to take action to protect birds' winter habitat and key stopover sites. These include protecting and restoring habitat, doing scientific monitoring, and building ecotourism opportunities as well as local love and expertise for birds.
North America has lost 1/3 of its birds in the last 50 years. And each year, more than half of its bird species migrate to (or through) Central America. These birds face many dangers like difficulty finding food, light pollution, hunters, and disappearing habitat. They need our protection, but scientists don't always know exactly where they are. Additionally, many people in Central America have no idea that the birds they see every year - and sometimes use for target practice - are in trouble.
Nicaragua and El Salvador are bird superhighways! Your gift will help collect data about birds there through five types of monitoring (MoSI stations, radio telemetry, a hilltop observation station, DNA analysis and citizen science) at several sites. It will also fund outreach to protect, restore, and clean up bird habitat, and help 100+ children learn to love birds through lessons, visits to some monitoring sites, and participating in global citizen science events like the Christmas Bird Count.
Your gift will help save migratory birds and their tropical habitats for future generations! It will also help the ecosystems that birds and many other creatures depend on, and build a data set that future conservationists can use. Our Binoculars for Slingshots and Junior Ranger projects have already changed local kid culture so that children discourage each other from killing birds with slingshots, and DNA analysis helped us discover where an endangered subspecies spends the winter.
