Rural Families Still Depend on Unsafe Water Source

By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

We sincerely thank the donors who have supported the Water Aid for Rural Women and Children in Nigeria project. Your concern for families who struggle daily to obtain safe water is deeply appreciated. At this time, however, the donations received are still too limited for the borehole construction work to begin.

In many rural communities across Nigeria, families depend on open streams and shallow wells that are often contaminated. Women and children travel long distances each day to collect water for drinking, cooking, and household use. In some villages, the journey can take several hours, leaving little time for other important activities such as school or farming.

The water collected from these sources is not always safe. Many families experience frequent cases of diarrhea, typhoid, and other water related illnesses linked to contaminated water. Children and elderly persons are often the most affected when unsafe water becomes the only available option.

This project plans to install 30 hand pump boreholes across 10 rural communities, bringing safe water closer to homes. Each borehole will be drilled, tested for safety, and built with a concrete platform to protect the water source from contamination. Local technicians will carry out the construction and will also receive guidance to maintain the systems.

When completed, these boreholes will serve about 3,500 women and children, reducing the long hours spent walking to distant water points. Reliable water sources can improve hygiene, lower the spread of water related illnesses, and allow families to focus on daily activities without the burden of searching for water.

We remain grateful for the generosity already shown by donors who believe in improving access to safe water. Continued support from compassionate individuals will help move this project forward so that these communities can finally have dependable sources of clean water.

Sincerely,

Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
