Project Report | Mar 4, 2022
WASH Champions have been formed

By Samirah Faruk | Project Leader

Dear Family, Friends and Supporters of Serendipity,

Our mission is to ensure that our comunities, schools and primary healthcare centers practise good hygiene and hand washing in order to stay safe and healthy. Remember we started our program last year when we trained 6 schools in Kano on being WASH Friendly.  Using a baseline and endline study to analyse data, we targeted these six schools to promote and apply behaiviour change, this method was adopted at the baseline study because it was a first kick off and we needed to get it off the ground to be a success.

Using the USAID Hygiene Improvement Project approach, we have a joint WASH team with the local governing cuncils WASH Unit were the schools are located and hygiene promoters were trained on using ODK data collection software to collect data from households, primary healthcare centers and schools hence the start off with Schools as a result of the baseline survey conducted.

The six schools representatives comprising of the head teacher, school director and the school WASH promoter were taught on basic guide to being WASH friendly, WASH Action Plan, how to improve on water, sanitation and hand washing facilities using simple technologies, formation of school WASH Committee and WASH Clubs, inclusion of WASH curriculum in their school calender.

We are proud to say that after six months of the training the six schools were assessed and two schools came out the best, Government Girls Senior Secondary Tarauni and Millienium Model Schools Bawo Road Kano. Plaques and awards were given to them as emblems to showcase that they have now become WASH friendly schools.

Your donation has created so much impact and for this we say a BIG THANK YOU!! This is just the beginning as we intend to train more schools on being WASH Friendly, our Primary Healthcare Centers and communities so that there is a behaiviour change.
