Let's talk Periods: Your Guide to a healthy cycle

By Samirah Faruk | Project Coordinator 2

Dear Family, Friends and supporters of Serendipity Healthcare Foundation,

Menstrual health hygiene is one of the problems that menstruating girls in junior and senior secondary schools in Kano Nigeria face. Most of the girls stay away from school during their periods because they do not have access to sanitary towels that would last them for a long time before being replaced with a new one and thus rely on rags with is not hygienic. Their schools do not have adequate toilets with handwashing stations and thus they stay back home during the period cycle.

Program Activities and Achievements thus far
To date, our MHH program has achieved the following:
 * Distribution of Sanitary Wears: We have successfully distributed over 280 sets of reusable/disposable sanitary wears to the girls at the adopted secondary school in Gadan. This includes the initial distribution of 250 and a recent addition of 30 more. This ensures that the girls have access to essential menstrual hygiene products.
 * Distribution of Educational Booklet: We developed and distributed a detailed short booklet that serves as a guide for the girls on managing their menstruation effectively. The booklet covers topics such as hygiene practices, nutrition, exercises for pain relief, and addressing common myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation.
Call to Action
To further support and expand this crucial program, we call upon:
 * Increased Donations: To enable us to reach more girls with sanitary products and educational materials.
 * Volunteer Support: Individuals with expertise in health education or community outreach are encouraged to volunteer their time.
 * Partnerships: We seek collaborations with other organizations and stakeholders to amplify our impact and ensure the sustainability of the program.
Your support will directly contribute to empowering young girls with the knowledge and resources they need to manage their menstrual health with dignity and confidence, ultimately contributing to their educational attainment and overall well-being.
Future Plans
Moving forward, we plan to:
 * Conduct more interactive workshops and awareness sessions on MHH within the school.
 * Explore the possibility of establishing a sustainable system for providing sanitary products.
 * Engage with teachers and parents to create a more supportive environment for menstrual health.
 * Monitor the impact of the program on school attendance and the girls' overall well-being.
Conclusion
The initial phase of our Menstrual Health Hygiene program has demonstrated the significant need and positive impact of providing access to sanitary products and comprehensive education. The distribution of over 280 sanitary wears and informative booklets in Gadan is a crucial step towards empowering these young girls. We are committed to continuing and expanding this vital work, ensuring that menstrual health is no longer a barrier to education and well-being. We believe that through continued effort and support, we can create a positive and lasting change in the lives of school-age girls in our community.

For the coming week of World Menstrual Hygiene Day 28th May, we have an online workshop to discuss further on menstrual health on self care, self love and understanding the symptoms, thus stay tuned on our social media handles to be updated on what we do.
