Gadan commuity members contributed towards the site for the drilling of the hand pumps after their village meeting and also formed part of the team that implemented the drilling through labour, four youths were also taught maintenance methods on the handpumps which they are required to maintain after every three months due to usage; this has ensured the acquisition of skills which they can use to earn income by servicing neighbouring villages handpumps. During the course of the drilling of the hand pumps, a block making industry sprang up from the use of mud to make local bricks that will be dried and used for building of houses. The industry is being overseen and supervised by the Gadan Youths Association whence any income from sales within and outside of the Gadan village will be spilt into three folds; salaries, purchase of local mud making equipments and money kept for maintenance of the hand pumps.
A memorandum of understanding between the Gadan Youths Association and our organisation is being signed so that an overseer from the association will be ssigned to take care of the handpumps from vandalisation, maintenance of handpumps.
After about a week of installation, pumping and testing, water quality analysis, we successfully commissioned and handed over the two hand pumps to the community.
This has completed the first stage of our Hygiene Improvement Programme which is a three pronged approach of provision of access to water (Installation of hand pumps), hygiene promotion (using environment, HIV/AIDS, malaria and gender equality as means for promotion of healthy behaiviours) and inclusion of the community into the local council policies.
