Basic Hygiene training for women and children

By Samirah Faruk | Project Leader

Training of women on local filtration
Training of women on local filtration

Dear SHF Supporters,

The last time you heard from us we had commissioned two handpumps which your kind donation and generousity has helped the children of Gadan have access to water.

Now, with your continued support we have had two separate trainings for the women and children on local water filtration and good hygiene practices within the past two months. We have trained the first batch of 18 women who will now cascade down this knowledge to other women. They were taught how to filter their water for drinking through the use of "Zogale" (Moringa seeds); Fatima Shuaibu a mother of five had this to say; "I never knew that zogale (moringa seeds) could be used to make water clean, now i clean up water which i put in bottles and sell to other women in my community at 50naira", Another trainee Indo Yushau also said; before now I only wash my hands with water without soap sometimes with ash but now having known that it is important to wash my hands everytime with soap, i will do so"

21 children from the two wards where the handpumps were cited were taught on how to wash their hands properly and the importance of using soap to wash their hands. A mini competition was done between the two wards to see which child will wash their hands the cleanest and Salaha Usman from Zauren Mallam won. She was rewarded with a trip to the Kano Zoological Garden. After the training, the children went home with washing up items such as bathing soap and washing soap.

As we have cited two handpumps and awareness of good hygiene practice has been established; for our next phase we would like to cite two more additional handpumps and train more women and children on good hygiene practices as during the course of our trainings we found out that there were orphans and vulnerable children who were affected by tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS that require close access to water to ease and boost their immunity.

We would like you to support our project again and a great way to do so is raise funds for us this month of September on a fundraising challenge through GlobalGiving.org as there are giveaway lovely prizes for our supporters who raise the most funds and unique donations; just click on the "Get Involved" tab and get started to create your own fundraising project on behalf of "Serendipity, Help a child project"; Tell your friends, family, network and help us put a smile on a child.

Please feel to contact me with any question, comment or advice at serenhealthcare@gmail.com or samirah@serendipityhealthcare.org. Thank you once again for your interest and support.

Warm Regards,

Samirah Faruk
