Dear supporters, friends and family of Serendipity,
From our last report where we had cited three more additional hand pumps in addition to the two initial handpumps, we rehabilitated three tubewells where we put a covering on the tubewells to prevent dirts, elements and dusts from entering.
We thus far have embarked upon hygiene trainings for 50 women from the on set whence they are trained on good hygiene practices, water storage and filtration to purify their drinking water. The trainings were done at the primary healthcare centre where we were assured of getting a large pool of women; trainings were conducted during antenatal days and immunization days. We intend to train additional 350 women by the end of the year 2014.
During the course of our trainings, we guided some youths on how to channel the runoff water to nursery beds where they could plant onions, tomatoes, pepper, spinach and cabbage. Aminu (a youth in Amarzakawa ward in Gadan) aka 'Pele' has this to say in his own words; 'Tun da muka sami ruwan butsase ban taba sani cewa yamu iya amfani that ruwan da yake zubowa daga bakin har zuwa ga rani ba', amma yanzu na sani kuma ina godiya da wannan karin ilimi da muka samu. Translated (Since we had this handpump, I never knew i could channel the runoff water into a nursery bed until now, I am very much appreciative of this knowledge).
On the 22nd of March, we had a walk with the community members of Gadan and other communities where we serve to further press our demand for more access to water in rural communities by the state government; although it is not part of our tasks but we felt that you as our supporter need to know about everything we are doing for the community.
Our next phase will be continous trainings on hygiene, water filtration, provision of water kegs to the women to store water and children to take to school but most importantly inclusive of women in water distribution/citation and policies within the local council; we thus solicit for more support, funds from you for our trainings during this period as we have so many women to reach and thus create a wider impact.
