Dear supporters, family and friends of Serendipity,
As part of our ongoing programme and campaign to ensure our communities are not vulnerable to water borne diseases; we embarked upon a School WASH Programme in four schools, distribution of WASH items and Advocacy Campaign to State Ministry of Water Resources and Development during the past quarter and within the World Water Week.
We taught a total of 200 children in primary, junior high and senior high in communities from four schools in Ungogo Local Governing Council on the benefits of good hand washing practices in preventing them from falling ill, being vulnerable to water related ailments thus missing school. WASH stations were donated to the four schools and school WASH Clubs were formed that will monitor the students adhering to what they were taught as well as exciting programmes to keep them engaged. Progress reports and feedback on what the students have achieved will be reviewed by us every fortnight.
WASH materials of bathing soap, washing up liquid and detergents were distributed to 50 women in Kudundu Fawa Dango community of Ungogo where Mairo (not real name), the young girl we reported on last collecting water from an open source tube well because of the high rate of their vulnerability to water borne diseases. The women were also taught on the importance of good hygiene and hand washing practices to ensure that they and their children are safe from falling ill.
A one day advocacy visit to the honorable commissioner of water resources and development to remind them on their promise to achieve 35% of provision of safe clean drinking water to rural communities in Kano at the last meeting held by the State Government review of developmental projects. The Honorable Commissioner stated that they had achieved only 20% but with the hope of achieving more before the tenor of the present administration comes to an end. We will revisit the Honorable Commissioner within the next quarter on a progress update.
A call to action to invest in the provision of clean water sources to support improved sanitation and hygiene practices in five more communities of Ungogo Local Council of Kano is needed as with your support we can do more.
Thank you for your continued support and trust in us to make a change in rural communities and making better lives.
Best Regards,
Abubakar Sadiq
